How did you start the first time in the import export business?

I engaged in foreign trade business in 2005, I started with the fastener business as Sales Representative in charge of the export sales to East Europe area. The products include DIN standard bolts, screws, nuts, washers, blind rivets, metal anchors and other non-standard articles.

After Canton Fair at Guangzhou in 2005, one Romanian customer who had been to our booth wanted to visit our company's factory at Shanghai. I accompanied them to our factory, showing and illustrating our forming workshop, heat treatment workshop, zinc plating workshop, packaging center and distribution platform with our DIDO stacking machine. They are operating one fastener factory for industry use in Romania, as the manpower cost surging, they want to purchase parts of products from China, and they are the owner.





When we went back to our offices, we discussed all details about the technic parameter, rates, estimated volume, and delivery dates. However our department manager did not take much into account of it and kept being tough, maybe because the customer was small operation and the inconvenience during the negotiation. However the key issue is great differential in prices between us. It seems we could get to reach anything in this negotiation.

After they went back, I still kept following this relationship and they still sent me inquiries with various specifications and volumes. While I was investigating the price table, I found our rates for normal sizes could almost match up their offer, however the larger size are great differential, and all the products that they were requesting were high strengthen grade class 8.8. I consulted our engineer and explained the products application for the customer and they gave me a useful message that the Maxim 2 sized nuts could made as normal grade instead of high strength while it will fit for intended application. I communicated with our customer and their engineer, so they finally could accept our offer.

Now in this case, some sizes are with margin, some with lose, but I could meet the end and still make some profit. Then everything became smooth in this case, afterword the annual sales volume in USD was $500,000 for this customer. That is my first time in export business.

I learned something that firstly, you must trust yourself much, though you may not be authority at time being, the customer is owner of the factory and the real kind of customer we need; Secondly, pay much patient to your customer even if they cause some inconvenience; Thirdly, small customers may be essential when economy is not very well as they could keep your business going.
